There is something familiar about being a longtime gamer: your library still holds a few games you have not finished, yet one trailer that hits the right note makes you think, ‘When this comes out, I have to play it.’

The final months of 2026 have a few names capable of keeping the PS5 busy. A city tied to our younger years. A martial arts world full of assassins. A hero who can heal his body but remains trapped in his past. And places that feel wrong even when you are only looking at them through a screen.

This list only includes games that had not yet been released as of September 12, 2026, and had announced PS5 release dates for the rest of the year. The order is an editorial choice based on official information, signs of interest, and hands-on impressions or early reviews. For unreleased games, final quality still needs to be established; what we can assess now is which titles offer compelling reasons to look forward to them.

5. SILENT HILL: TOWNFALL — SOME PLACES BECOME HARDER TO FACE THE QUIETER THEY GET

Announced PS5 release date: September 24, 2026. [16][17]

If you enjoy the feeling of wanting to close a door the moment you open it, Townfall is one to watch.

The game follows Simon Ordell to St. Amelia in Scotland. Its first-person perspective puts you close to the town’s unsettling traces. A handheld CRTV helps you assess danger; puzzles are designed around the story, so each solution also reveals something about this place. Sometimes you have to fight back; sometimes hiding is the way to survive. [16][19]

Townfall earns its place here through specific impressions beyond its trailers. GamesRadar+ put it at the top of its horror picks in Fall Preview 2026. A Tom’s Guide writer ranked it second among their Gamescom experiences after roughly 90 minutes of play, particularly enjoying the atmosphere and mysterious opening. These are choices by individual writers and editorial teams, not the results of a vote by the whole community. [18][19]

TechRadar, however, also reported feeling lost and finding the pace of exploration uneven during its preview session. Townfall may therefore suit players who enjoy observation, deduction, and letting fear build slowly. The evidence for its appeal currently leans toward specialist press coverage, making fifth place the less certain selection on this list. [20]

Sometimes what stays with you from a horror game is a corridor where nothing appears, yet you hesitate for a long time before moving on. That is the feeling worth anticipating in Townfall.

4. CONTROL RESONANT — WHEN A CITY NO LONGER FOLLOWS THE RULES

Announced PS5 release date: September 24, 2026. [12]

Control Resonant puts Dylan Faden at the center of its story, in a Manhattan distorted by supernatural forces. Jesse is missing. The anomalies have spread beyond the familiar building’s walls, and Dylan must step outside to confront them. [14]

The biggest change is right in the character’s hands: Aberrant, a melee weapon that can change shape. In a three-hour hands-on preview, Game Informer described a fast action approach combining aerial movement with different weapon choices. The writer welcomed the change, although this remained an experience of only part of the game. [14]

In its August 11, 2026 report, Remedy said Resonant had surpassed 1.5 million wishlists across platforms. The company also reported that the game ranked among the top three most pre-ordered games on PlayStation in the US, Germany, and Brazil during the campaign following the opening of pre-orders. These are company-reported figures for a specific period, not a current global ranking. [13]

Those figures show interest. For players, the appeal lies in a much simpler question: if an entire city becomes a supernatural phenomenon, how will I explore it?

A Gamescom presentation covered by GamesRadar+ also drew praise for the world’s strangeness and the combat’s potential. The writer watched a developer demonstration rather than playing, so those comments add a perspective on design without establishing how the controls feel or how stable the game is. [15]

If you want a game with a clear personality that has you fighting while wondering what on earth is happening, this is well worth keeping a place for.

3. MARVEL’S WOLVERINE — THERE IS MORE TO LOOK FORWARD TO THAN THE CLAWS

Announced PS5 release date: September 15, 2026. [8]

Watching Wolverine charge into an enemy, the most immediately exciting thing for fans is still the weight of a character who always fights up close. But following him through an entire campaign requires more reasons to care about Logan.

Insomniac is building its own story: three years after leaving Team X, Logan returns while mutants are being hunted by Bolivar Trask. Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabretooth are among the announced faces in that journey. The game is single-player, focuses on its story, and does not use an open-world structure. [8][9][22]

Wolverine was nominated for Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2025, and GamesRadar+ selected it as the leading action-adventure game in Fall Preview 2026. Those two signals show that it is attracting attention in major selections, although they do not tell us exactly how many people are waiting to buy it. [2][18]

Unlike many other titles here, Wolverine has received full reviews from the press before release. TechRadar praised the visuals, performances, and satisfying combat, while finding that the tactical depth did not live up to the progression systems. [11]

A reasonable expectation, then, is an intense adventure with characters and major action set pieces to follow. Logan fans have plenty of reasons to be excited; players who want combat that continually pushes them to be inventive should still weigh the mixed impressions.

Personally, what I most want to see is the moment Logan retracts his claws: after all those fights, what has he managed to hold on to?

2. PHANTOM BLADE ZERO — THE DREAM OF PLAYING OUT A MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE FIGHT YOURSELF

Announced release date: October 29, 2026; PlayStation notes October 28 for the US and some other regions. The old September 9 date has been replaced. [4][6]

Some trailers leave you remembering only the scenery. Phantom Blade Zero makes you want to rewind a parry, a weapon switch, and a counterattack.

S-GAME casts players as Soul in the dark martial arts world of Wulin, where conspiracies and pursuits intertwine. Its August presentation announced more than 30 main weapons, 25 Phantom Edges secondary weapons, progression systems, and multiple difficulty levels. Side quests can also open up additional story paths. That suggests an ambition to create an adventure with plenty to explore around its fights. [6]

As a sign of interest, S-GAME announced on December 28, 2025 that the game had passed one million wishlists just 15 days after wishlisting opened. This is a historical milestone reported by the studio, not the latest wishlist total and not one million copies sold. [5]

More reassuring than beautiful demonstrations is the fact that journalists have actually played the game. In its hands-on coverage at Gamescom LATAM 2026, GamesRadar+ praised the fast combat, combo chaining, and sense of flexibility. The writer also found the demo more approachable than its appearance suggested. S-GAME has repeatedly made clear that it does not define the game as a Soulslike. [7]

Second place is an editorial judgment about the combination of its existing appeal and the potential of its combat; wishlist totals taken at different times are not enough to conclude, through a direct count, that it is more anticipated than Control.

What remains to be seen is whether that feeling lasts throughout the game, whether exploration is engaging enough, and how the finished PS5 version runs. But for someone who grew up with martial arts films, the idea of controlling a fight with that kind of rhythm is already enough to create a very particular excitement.

1. GRAND THEFT AUTO VI — THE RETURN THAT IS HARDEST TO IGNORE

Announced PS5 release date: November 19, 2026. [1]

If one entry has the strongest basis for broad anticipation, it is GTA VI.

The game won Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2025 and Most Wanted Game at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025. These are two signals from different awards, more persuasive than relying only on a single website’s own list of ‘hot games.’ They recognize expectations for GTA VI, not the quality of its finished release. [2][3]

Rockstar brings players back to Vice City and the state of Leonida, following Jason and Lucia. A seemingly simple score goes wrong, pulling them into a criminal conspiracy spanning the state; to survive, they have to depend on each other. The extended look on the PlayStation website is described as being captured entirely from in-game footage running on PS5. [1]

For anyone who has spent time roaming GTA’s cities, that appeal is easy to understand. Sometimes a memorable session starts with the intention to do a mission, only for curiosity to lead you down another road. A place interesting enough can make even getting from A to B into a story.

That is what I am waiting for in GTA VI: a world that makes me want to stay longer than I intended, and two characters compelling enough to keep players there once the initial amazement fades.

At present, the sources used for this article do not provide independent reviews of the complete game. First place therefore reflects anticipation and potential, not a claim that GTA VI has already surpassed every rival in quality.

Five names, five different kinds of excitement: a town to fear, a city to explore, a hero to understand, a martial arts world to test yourself in, and a Vice City to return to.

If you could make time for only one game during the rest of 2026, which would you choose?
